NASA’s Cassini orbiter has recently sent back some amazing images of one of Saturn’s 60 moons, Enceladus.

Enceladus hangs silently above the ice rings of Saturn. This image looks like an Iain M Banks cover.

I love it when I accidentally stumble across something that instantly takes me back to being a kid. During my weekly weird round-up on ebay last week I came across the CLASSIC genius that is Garbage Pail Kids trading cards and I was instantly right back in the playground. So of course I bought 2 packs, a 1984 US series 4 (first picture set below) and a UK series 1. The artwork on these things is amazing and the ideas behind each character are genius. These things definitely put me on the road to doing what I do and inspired me to spend countless hours drawing when I was a kid. There’s an interesting interview with John Pound, the artist who painted the US series 4 here.

Maybe when I have a bit more time I'll re-scan 3 or 4 of the best ones and put them back on here bigger so you can see the detail.
I also came across another set of cards which arrived today that I’d never seen before. Released in 1980, Weird Wheels by Topps look like they were just a US thing which is a shame because they’re amazing. The majority of the set were painted by artist Norman Saunders and I feel like a kid at Christmas to have my hands on these. Amazing detail, fantastic colours, great ideas and super inspiring. Maybe I’ll have a go at doing my own set of weird cards for disturbed kids, that would be an awesome project. I’d probably replace the nasty gum inside the packet with something else though, that stuff tasted of nothing after about 4 chews.
I bought a Chinese ink stick and grinding stone last week and have just started using that with a Raphael Kolinsky #1 Sable brush. I love the detail you can get in with the brush and the ease of different washes you can work into the page. The quality of the ink produced is a bit better than ready made Indian ink but I think I need a bit more practice with the actual ‘grinding’ side of things with the ink stick but it’s a really interesting process, and one of the oldest in the world for drawing which is cool.

Incredible as always. Heaven is taken from Unkle’s latest album End Titles…Stories for Film. If you haven’t got it, get it.
The latest recruitment to the Eelus Army. We picked Bubble up today, he’s a 6 month old rescued kitten from a local cattery. Bubble has now been changed to Hubble and is already running the studio.

I don’t think last years Cans Festival needs any introduction. I painted what I thought was my best piece to date and had an amazing time doing it (big thanks to Adam koukoudakis for his help and patience). I’ve had a few people asking how I get to the final piece and what are my images based on so here’s a little peek. I spend a lot of time looking for images in old books, any kinds of magazines I can get my hands on and the internet. Luckily my girlfriend buys tat like Vogue and other glossy excuses to stop eating and hate yourself. So from them I found these pages…
Scan them in, lots of playing around in Adobe Photoshop, then into Adobe Illustrator for the final artworking, print them, cut them, spray them, get drunk. The print of this image has sold out at Pictures On Walls but they will be releasing a super limited hand finished edition that I’ll be painting very soon. With the power of my blog machine, I shall keep you posted with the progress.
Last November saw the opening of Mutate Britain. An awesome event that mixed music with art with metal, lots and lots of metal. I was lucky enough to be given some scrap plane fuselage along with some artists like Eine, Elph, Inkie and Mode 2 to name a few and this is how I worked it.
You can buy a print of this here. This is the 1st giclee print I’ve ever had done and I have to say I was amazed at the quality and detail.
