Now that all things Freakshow have become a collaborative project more or less, I thought I’d have a little switch around with the blogs. This blog will now give you all the goings on from both Ben and I as we’ll both add posts giving you little insights into what’s going down behind the scenes of the Freakshow Projects.

If you want to keep it Eel then my new personal blog is over at http://writhingmind.tumblr.com. Photography, musings, inspiration, whatever, all on a much simpler platform.

Huge thanks to everyone who has followed me on this blog so far. With the tumblr blog being a more straightforward approach it’ll be updated way more than this one has been in the past.

PS3 Theme

I’ve been working with Studio Output and Sony Playstation to develop an animated theme that you can download to your PS3 to spice up your background and icons.

My dynamic theme will be available to buy from the PS3 store on the 14th December. You’ll be able to see the final animation nearer the time but for now here is a cool background I created for the theme, (click for larger image). Suitably trippy with a touch of sci-fi goodness. I’d like to do more of this please.

New Print Details – Wound Up & Let Down

A week from today, Tuesday 6th Dec at 2pm GMT, my new print edition Wound-Up & Let Down will be available to buy from my brand new store. One of the more popular images from my last London solo show, this has been a favourite with a lot of you for a while now so I’m happy to finally offer it as a print edition.

As I’ve mentioned previously, the new Freakshow Projects store will totally replace the old store, so you’ll need to head to http://freakshowprojects.com to buy all print editions and smaller more affordable originals from now on.

As you can see there will be 2 variations of the print, the full details for each colour are below. And to add a little Christmas cheer, anyone buying both colours will get 10% of the combined print prices (£30) refunded back to their Paypal account. ***THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE SPECIAL EDITION***

Easing in, winding up.

My mighty spray paint fume extractor was finally fitted a couple of weeks ago and I was pretty excited about seeing it in the new space and more importantly, getting to use it again. To ease myself in nicely, I decided to revisit a couple of old friends and give them a new look. So here are the first couple of paintings I did after moving in, Wound Up & Let Down, both on vintage wooden printers trays with 24ct gold leaf. Both available to buy, so drop me an email if you like the look of them. Available individually or as a pair.

Sickboy – Heaven & Earth

I had a sniffly call from Mr Sickboy a while back and he very kindly offered me the opportunity to not only collaborate with him on his upcoming London solo show, but to work alongside some other great artists such as Lister, Vhils, D*Face, Will Barras, Connor Harrington, Eine and more. Well the time has finally come and the show opens tomorrow, from what I hear, it’s going to be a little bit special.

New Beginnings.

Well, I’m back in a fully working (and brand new) studio, in a brand new part of the country, and now that the dust has settled and the work machine has started it’s engines I thought I’d finally update the blog. I moved both house and studio from Hastings to Brighton around 5 weeks ago; it’s amazing how much things can slow down, even grind to a complete halt when you’re relocating. Happy to say the studio is now running at full speed and it feels great to be back at work. I’ve put a lot of time into getting the studio to a level of functionality and comfort that really makes it a great place to be every day as I’m planning on spending a lot of time here from now on.

And with the move comes a new start in many ways. A new exciting and creative city to explore, but also a new way of working and putting my work out there. To start with, for the first time in about 5 years I’m now sharing my studio space with my good friend and fellow artist/illustrator Ben Southern. It’s a strange thing to go back to after working in total solitude for such a long time, but having another creative around to discuss ideas and collaborate with is actually pretty nice.

So as well as continuing to push forward on my own as a solo artist, I’ll also be forming a new band with Ben known as the Freak Show Projects, (apologies for the naff music analogy, but I’m going to run with it). From within the studio, we’ll be experimenting with new sounds, new instruments and new ways to play, the results of which will be available in the FSP online shop. Keeping things as unique but affordable as possible, we’ll be working on everything from t-shirts to prints, paper-cuts and collages, 3D objects, books, zines, basically anything that we think will be fun at the time. And, in the spirit of a true Freak Show, things will come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, styles and directions. The new studio is a place to experiment and have fun regardless of stylistic restraints, the new online shop will be the place to get your hands on these new things we create.

The Freak Show Projects shop will totally replace my current store, so as well as the more experimental playful pieces and products, it will also be the place to get your hands on all future Eelus printed editions. I’ll still be pushing forward with the Eelus work and I already have 2 solo shows booked for next year which I’m very excited about. So please keep your eyes on eelus.com for any news on available originals and how you can go about buying them.

As soon as I have more news on either Freak Show Projects or my solo work this is where you’ll read about it, so don’t forget to pop round for a brew whenever you can.

Paper Cut Process.

If there’s one thing that’s common knowledge about me, I’m quite partial to a little macabre. A while back, I came across a great panel from an old Eerie Comic book that just jumped out at me. Here’s the panel in question…

I made a mental note and thought it would look great at some point as a paper cut. So, when I was asked to do something for the Stolen Space Summer Group Show, my schedule was pretty hectic and wouldn’t allow me to get my teeth into a big piece, but my mind went instantly back to the Eerie panel.

I re-drew the characters and changed a few details here and there, decided to add more foliage to create a little more depth to the scene, then cut the scene from 3 sheets of bog standard copy paper.

As dark as the scene is, I thought some colour would really make the piece pop. A little bit of spray paint, a reconditioned circular picture frame I found on a market stall, and the piece was done.
