I love it when I accidentally stumble across something that instantly takes me back to being a kid. During my weekly weird round-up on ebay last week I came across the CLASSIC genius that is Garbage Pail Kids trading cards and I was instantly right back in the playground. So of course I bought 2 packs, a 1984 US series 4 (first picture set below) and a UK series 1. The artwork on these things is amazing and the ideas behind each character are genius. These things definitely put me on the road to doing what I do and inspired me to spend countless hours drawing when I was a kid. There’s an interesting interview with John Pound, the artist who painted the US series 4 here.

Maybe when I have a bit more time I'll re-scan 3 or 4 of the best ones and put them back on here bigger so you can see the detail.
I also came across another set of cards which arrived today that I’d never seen before. Released in 1980, Weird Wheels by Topps look like they were just a US thing which is a shame because they’re amazing. The majority of the set were painted by artist Norman Saunders and I feel like a kid at Christmas to have my hands on these. Amazing detail, fantastic colours, great ideas and super inspiring. Maybe I’ll have a go at doing my own set of weird cards for disturbed kids, that would be an awesome project. I’d probably replace the nasty gum inside the packet with something else though, that stuff tasted of nothing after about 4 chews.
